DM Episodes 14 & 15: FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE

Pro-tip: this poor douchebag is the last guy to play one of Yami Yugi’s Shadow Games.

I mean, he still deserves it, he’s still a douchebag. It just seems kinda rough to impose that on the dude when he’s already suffering from gigantism.

HEY GUYS, DID YOU KNOW THAT FIRE IS PRETTY AWESOME?

The manga brings up this interesting, if ultimately irrelevant point about what the player killers’ job is.

…which ties into this actually relevant point, that it’s not just Yugi that Pegasus needs out of the way for his I2 takeover plan to work. Pegasus has to be the number one duelist in the world, because KaibaCorp’s reputation relies on their CEO being the best at the game. Remember, mangaverse Kaiba is still officially “comatose”.

But that’s why the Player Killer has that enormous glove. He has to fit 40 star chips in it.

BUT DUDE. YOU GUYS. FIRE.

Manga Yami bets his life at his own free will here, instead of getting shackled at random by the Player Killer. It’s a pretty typical move of his, since Shadow Games often have those stakes anyway, and he actually bet his life against Haga to make up for missing star chips back at the beginning of the tournament, even though that wasn’t a Shadow Game at all. But while Haga just thought it was silly, the Player Killer is actually interested.

bUT duBES.

FirE.

The manga’s imagery simultaneously plays with the concept of “true darkness” (PK’s “darkness” is just him kinda lurking around at night and abducting people, while the power of the Millennium Items was born from the depths of hell itself) and with the rope around Yami’s neck. PK gets hallucinations of walking up the steps of a gallows, which each step being part of the countdown to his doom (anime PK has… numbers falling out of the sky?)

BUT

BUT

FIRE

FIRE

FIRE

IT’S LIKE ALMOST AS COOL AS LASERS.

Oh hey! It’s time for more

Random Powers of the Millennium Puzzle!

Manga:

-Container for Yami Yugi’s soul

-Capable of psychically locating Jonouchi (re: Chapter 12)

-Allows Jonouchi to topdeck

Anime:

-Container for Yami Yugi’s soul

-Send psychic messages to Pegasus

-Telekinesis

-Can… switch which souls are in which cards?

-Fireproofing

One interesting thing about the anime is how hung up Bakura is on the fact that Yami Yugi is using his voice/words to disorient his opponent. It’s mostly Mai’s territory in the manga, but Bakura takes it over here. The anime doesn’t discuss the relationship between Bakura and Yami Bakura like, at all. But coming at it having read the manga, it’s really interesting that they pulled that out, because in the manga, Yami Bakura is the creepy voice in Bakura’s head, who (so far) has had some really creepy things to say. I wish either version of canon had gone into that more.
